Medsin Newcastle is the Newcastle branch of the Medsin student network, interested in health inequalities around the world. Through a diverse range of projects and campaigns it aims to understand and challenge the root causes of poor health. Medsin works within the medical school, as well as throughout the university. There are many projects which run in Newcastle with the support of Medsin. These include Marrow, Medsex, Teddy Bear Hospital, Save a baby’s life, SKIP, KAOS, CPRiS. More information about these can be found on the individual project websites from the Medsin Explained Booklet 2007 and at the Medsin Explained event held in October 2007.As well as supporting the projects, Medsin itself is involved in running ‘theme of the month’ events. Cylone Nargis hit Myanmar a month ago; reports of the aftermath are disappearing from our news and yet the disaster is still affecting millions of people. Newcastle Medsin would like to take the opportunity to hold an informal discussion about the various topics that surround the cyclone, and the country’s politics. We will be discussing the aftermath of cyclone, humanitarian aid, disease as a consequence, political future, unethical companies trading in Myanmar, and human rights violation in the country.
